Homebuilding Industry to Launch Major Effort to Address Homelessness in Utah

HomeAid Launches 19th chapter in Utah to build housing for homeless Americans

It is estimated that nearly 3,000 people experience homelessness on any given night across Utah, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development. HomeAid America, a national nonprofit provider of housing for the homelessness, is stepping up to address this tragic situation. HomeAid has established its 19th chapter in the nation in partnership with the Salt Lake Home Builders Association. HomeAid Utah will work with the local home building industry to develop, build and maintain housing for nonprofits serving those experiencing homelessness.

"We are thrilled to bring our proven HomeAid model to Utah and work with such an incredible group of building industry leaders to address homelessness in the Beehive State," said Peter Simons, CEO of HomeAid America. "I have no doubt this chapter of HomeAid will have great success in this important effort.”

HomeAid will allow us to expand our community service efforts to assist the needs of our homeless community. Our elected leaders have taken this issue to heart; we want to be a part of the solution with them. Unfortunately, the need is great. With the help of this prestigious organization, we are eager to help knowing home is where doors of opportunity open.

HomeAid identifies charities working to help homeless families and individuals that are in need of additional or upgraded facilities in which to house people while they offer needed programmatic resources, such as job and life skills training, financial counseling, and physical and emotional support. HomeAid’s builder captains and their trade partners take on these projects, completing them at a deep discount through the in-kind donation of their time and materials.

“HomeAid will allow us to expand our community service efforts to assist the needs of our homeless community,” said Jaren Davis, Executive Officer of the Salt Lake Home Builders Association. “Our elected leaders have taken this issue to heart; we want to be a part of the solution with them. Unfortunately, the need is great. With the help of this prestigious organization, we are eager to help knowing home is where doors of opportunity open.”

Bringing HomeAid’s homeless housing development and community outreach programs to Utah was made possible by a grant from HomeAid America and donations from the local industry. Academy Mortgage and Woodside Homes, both major national building industry companies and HomeAid America partners who are based in Utah, made substantial investments in the organization to get the chapter launched.

As part of HomeAid's national network of chapters, HomeAid Utah will have the resources needed to obtain donated building products for its charity projects. It will also have access to national grants and publicity, a deep network of chapter resources, and a myriad of other benefits.

“Having a home is the most important thing in anyone’s life,” said Nate Shipp, Partner at DAI Utah, one of the leading land developers in the area, who was elected as the President of the HomeAid Utah Board. “As a developer, we build communities that make a difference to those who live there. As President of the Board, I look forward to doing something even more rewarding – to help provide housing and improve the lives of those in our community that are less fortunate.”

HomeAid Utah's initial Board of Directors includes 15 executives from leading building industry companies including DAI Utah, Lennar, Woodside Homes, Oakwood Homes, Green Ridge Builders, Richmond-American Homes, First American Title, Stewart Title, Academy Mortgage, Metrostudy, Chase, Ray Quinney & Nebeker P.C., Meyers Research and Builders FirstSource.
